The Inventor's Folding Chair was inspired by a chair in the Smithsonian Castle Collection that was designed in New York City and patented as an "improved folding chair" on December 22, 1863. The frame of the original chair is walnut, cut to resemble bamboo, with gold rings painted around each of the four poles as well as the two stretchers. This chair was on exhibit for over twenty years in the Smithsonian’s popular "1876, A Centennial Exhibition." With a similar look and feel, the Inventor’s Folding Chair has a frame resembling bamboo and a leather upholstered seat and back
